Tap for the Mother's blessing

DurgaPuja

The Mother comes home, and the whole city lights up.

Goddess Durga with ten arms seated on her lion

Dhaak drums calling down the lane, shiuli flowers after rain. The Mother comes, and for these days the whole world softens in her gaze. Shubho Durga Puja! 🌺

Durga Puja wishes with name, in one paragraph

A Durga Puja wish with your name on it is an ordinary greeting card with one thing changed: it says who sent it. Type your name on this page and you get a card that opens with “Asha is wishing you Shubho Durga Puja” instead of a forward from nobody in particular. It is free, takes about ten seconds, and there is nothing to sign up for.

What Durga Puja celebrated

Durga Puja is Bengal's largest festival, marking Durga's defeat of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. For those days the Goddess is not visiting a temple — she is home, with her children, and the city rearranges itself around her.

When Durga Puja falls

The last five days of Navratri, in September or October: Shashthi through Vijayadashami.

Most Indian festivals follow a lunar calendar, so the date moves against the Gregorian one each year. For the official dates, the Government of India holiday calendar is the one to check.

How Durga Puja is celebrated

  • Pandal hopping — enormous temporary structures, each competing on design
  • Dhaak drums, and dhunuchi naach danced holding smoking incense burners
  • Anjali, the flower offering, on Ashtami morning
  • Sindoor khela on the last day, women marking each other with vermilion
  • Bhog served to whoever turns up, which is the whole neighbourhood

Kolkata is the centre, but the festival travels wherever Bengalis have — Delhi's Chittaranjan Park and London's pandals keep the same calendar.

What people say

Shubho Durga Puja, or Shubho Bijoya on the final day.

Straight answers

How long does Durga Puja last?
The public festival runs five days, Shashthi to Vijayadashami, though preparation and pandal building start months earlier.
What is sindoor khela?
On the last morning, married women offer vermilion to the Goddess and then smear it on each other's faces before the idols are taken to the river. It is a farewell, and it is loud.
Why are the idols immersed?
Durga is understood to be visiting her parents' home for a few days. The immersion on Vijayadashami sends her back to Kailash — which is why the day is celebratory and slightly sad at once.
How do I send a Durga Puja wish with my name on it?
Type your name in the box on this page and tap GO. You get a card that opens with your name on it, and a button that hands the whole thing to WhatsApp. It is free, and there is nothing to sign up for.
Is this Durga Puja greeting really free?
Yes. No account, no watermark, no upgrade prompt and nothing to install. Your name travels inside the link rather than being stored anywhere.
